How to pray the rosary

The Rosary is one of the most beloved and widely practiced Catholic devotions, combining both vocal prayer and deep meditation on key moments in the life of Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary. It is a simple yet powerful way to enter into contemplation, helping the faithful to focus their minds and hearts on the mysteries of faith. It is traditionally prayed using a string of beads, which serves as a guide to keep track of each prayer and meditation. A complete Rosary includes:

  • The Sign of the Cross
  • The Apostles’ Creed
  • One Our Father
  • Three Hail Marys
  • One Glory Be
  • The meditation on the Mysteries (Joyful, Sorrowful, Glorious, and Luminous), each consisting of: one Our Father, ten Hail Marys (a decade), onee Glory Be
  • The Hail Holy Queen and final prayers

This is how a traditional rosary looks like:

Learning how to pray the Rosary is simple once you understand its main parts:

1. The Beads (Rosary Beads):

The Rosary chain is divided into smaller beads for the Hail Marys and larger beads, called Pater, for the Our Fathers. Each bead guides the prayer rhythm.

2. The Decade:

A decade is a sequence of 10 Hail Marys, preceded by one Our Father and concluded with the Glory Be. A full traditional Rosary consists of five decades.

3. The Mysteries of the Rosary:

Each decade recalls a “Mystery,” an important event in the lives of Jesus and Mary. Depending on the day of the week, Catholics meditate on one of four sets: Joyful, Sorrowful, Glorious, or Luminous. These Mysteries guide the prayer and help deepen reflection.  *Click here to see the list of the Mysteries of the Rosary with their corresponding days of the week.

Step-by-Step Guide to Praying the Rosary

1. Sign of the Cross and Opening Prayers

  • The Sign of the Cross : Begin by holding the crucifix. Make the Sign of the Cross and say, "In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.".
  • Our Father : On the first large bead, pray one Our Father.
  • Three Hail Marys : On the next three small beads, pray one Hail Mary on each. These are often for an increase in faith, hope, and charity.
  • The Glory Be : On the next large bead, pray the Glory Be.

2. Announcement of the First Mystery

  • Announce the First Mystery of the Rosary
  • Take a moment to meditate on the event of the Mystery

3. The First Decade

  • Our Father: On the next large bead, pray one Our Father.
  • Ten Hail Marys: On the ten small beads that follow, pray one Hail Mary on each, continuing to meditate on the Mystery.
  • Glory Be: After the tenth Hail Mary, pray the Glory Be.
  • Optional Fatima Prayer : After the Glory Be, you may choose to pray the Fatima Prayer: "O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell; lead all souls to Heaven, especially those who have most need of Thy mercy."

4. Continue with the Remaining Mysteries

  • Announce the next Mystery
  • Repeat the decade prayers
  • Continue for the remaining four Mysteries.

5. Concluding Prayers

  • Hail Holy Queen
  • Rosary Prayer:

"O God, whose Only Begotten Son, by His life, death, and resurrection,
    has purchased for us the rewards of eternal life;
    grant, we beseech Thee,
that while meditating on these mysteries
of the Most Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary,
we may imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise,
through the same Christ our Lord. Amen."

  • (Optional) Litany of Loreto or another prayer
  • End with the Sign of the Cross

The Litany of Loreto

The Litany of Loreto (or the Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary) is a foundational prayer in the Catholic tradition. It is composed of a series of invocations and petitions addressed to the Blessed Virgin Mary, honoring her through a vast array of symbolic and theological titles.
