As we already know, First Communion is one of the three Sacraments of Initiation into the Catholic Church together with Baptism and Confirmation. Let’s learn, then, some of the amazing effects of the First Holy Communion. This sacrament can literally change our life.
1. Communion with Jesus
Through the Eucharist, we fuse our being with that of Christ. St. Cyril of Alexandria describes it as similar to “when melted wax is fused with other wax.” The Christian path is a journey to become like Jesus, to “abide in him” and he in us. The Eucharist is the means for this to happen.
2. Destruction of Venial Sin
The Eucharist destroys venial sin. The fervor of our innate charity can be dampened by venial sin. When we receive the Eucharist, though, we are one with the Charity himself, which burns away the vestiges of our venial sins and leaves us pure and ready to begin a new life.
3. Spiritual Consolation
Holy Communion let us experience the real unity with Jesus, and with God through Jesus. When we are going through a difficult time, then, we can come to the Eucharist, which is a pure source of joy, hope, and peace. We will suddenly feel stronger.
4. A Personal Relationship with Jesus
As Christians, we are expected to cultivate our personal relationship with Jesus. We can do that by praying and meditating every day. Yet, it is primarily through the Eucharist that we can truly have an intimate encounter with Jesus.
5. Eucharist Can Become the Focal Point of Our Life
If we really understood the profound meaning of the Eucharist, we would probably make it the focal point of our life. What happens through the Eucharist is definitely the most important thing that can happen in the life of a Christian. This Sacrament can literally change our way of living, thinking, and interacting with other people. We just have to let it happen.
